How Can I Help?

Who is Stacy Joy Goodman?
On April 24th, 1994, my daughter Stacy went to sleep happy -- she was an intelligent, loving teenager with a bright future in front of her.  Stacy was going to be a doctor -- a pediatrician.  She knew it since the time she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, just before her 4th birthday.  Stacy wanted to make a difference, to help people.  She had great plans for the future.  But at age 17, those plans ended the next morning when Stacy didn't wake up.

Juvenile diabetes is often misunderstood as being under control and not recognized as the killer that it is.  In fact, every three minutes, somebody's child dies from diabetes or its complications.  Every three minutes.

Stacy knew that juvenile diabetes was life-threatening.  But on a day-to-day basis, the routine of trying to control the disease had an enormous effect on her, as it does on all those afflicted with juvenile diabetes.  For the last 14 years of her life, Stacy took blood tests at least three times a day.  And she had to inject herself with insulin three times every day.  That's over 15,000 blood tests and 15,000 injections.  No one should have to live with this disease.  No parent should have to watch their child take 1, 2, or 3 insulin shots daily to control juvenile diabetes, always fearing the possibility of seeing that child suffer the terrible side affects of diabetes.

Despite the helplessness and pain I feel, I know there is something I can do, something we can do together, to keep Stacy's memory and dreams alive forever -- we can join the fight to find a cure for juvenile diabetes.  To this end, we have created The Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation, to fund specific medical research projects committed to finding a cure.

Stacy isn't here now to become a doctor and to realize her dream of finding a cure for juvenile diabetes and other terrible childhood diseases.  But through The Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation, with the support and generosity of so many friends, we can keep her memory and her dreams alive -- we will be able to fund important research projects, maybe one that leads to a cure.  We can do our part to ensure that other children get a better break than Stacy did.
